Slow claying

And it will be slow posting also.
Carving, sculpting, whittling clay. I am not sure which word applies. I guess whittling because my dictionary says:"cut or shape by carving thin shavings from a surface, making repeated reductions." I guess that is what I am doing. All I know is that it is a slow (and enjoyable) process. Every chip removed with a carving tool modifies the shape.

Éloge de la lenteur...
Sculpter, tailler, gosser.

My (sort of) problem is when to finish: taking off another sliver will make things so much better (says me to moi). The need to make it "perfect" could destroy things and even the shape I am eventually looking for. But then, what am I looking for? My initial plans always get modified.
This little square I made to look like marble. On one side I practiced making Celtic knots for another project that I will show at the end of the month (it is a challenge). On the other side I cut out a shape that I used in a drawing.

This is the last piece I whittled... It will be part of a larger sculpture, a totem pole.
No sanding because I want to leave tool marks.
Polymer clay lends itself beautifully to carving. I make blocs, bake them and whittle them. Some might say: why don't you model the clay first? I will answer, because I am in no hurry and my purpose is to start with a lump and extract a shape from it.
I have some very old clay and I just baked a block right out of the package. That way I can use it without having to condition the bejeebers out of it.
To be continued.....
